Destin Hot Spot: Henderson Beach State Park

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

Henderson Beach is a nature lovers dream. It offers 6,000 feet of scenic shoreline on the emerald coast that is a little quieter than many of the other beaches. It has just been re-decked with beautiful new composite lumber planks. The winding boardwalks allow you to enjoy all the animal and plant life without harming our precious dunes and their eco-systems. Over 200,000 new plants including sea oats, panic grass and blue stem are all being planted to help our sands heal from the past 2 hurricanes.

Most nature lovers enjoy camping and it’s especially enjoyable at Henderson Beach State Park. Full facility campsites have access to an air conditioned and heated bathhouse facility for the more modern campers. There are still the classic conveniences of outdoor showers for those of you who really enjoy the great outdoors.

It’s also a kid-friendly park with a fun playground and gazebos with grills for marshmallows and hot dogs!

It’s easy to find, too. There’s none of this winding around scary dirt roads in the boon docks stuff. It’s just east of Destin on U.S. 98 near Wal-Mart. For rates and info on volunteering to help the dunes call 850-837-7550 and don’t forget your binoculars and bird books!
