5 Myths About Destin

Beach Clouds

People always like to give their opinions on everything. They want to tell you what they think about what you’re wearing, what you’re eating, what you’re drinking, and even where you’re going. These are some actual statements we have heard when Destin, Florida has come up in conversation and we are here to set the record straight.

It’s all retirees. Florida does have a reputation of being where people go to retire. However, Florida is a big state. Everyone isn’t retiring in Destin. The big retirement cities are more towards Central Florida. Ocala, Sarasota, and Palm Beach – these are well-known for being great retirement areas. Destin has a nice mix of all ages and families. When winter comes around, we do have our share of snowbirds that stay a few months. Visitors come from up North to enjoy the warmer temperatures. These are the ones you’ll see out in the water in January.

It’s a party town. On the other end of the spectrum, some seem to think of MTV’s Spring Break when they hear of Destin. However, Destin is not crowded with college kids taking over the beaches. While we do get our share of vacationing college kids, Panama City tends to be more of the Spring Break party area. Like we said, our beaches are family-friendly and the popular beach restaurants are safe zones for our children.

It’s too expensive. Some don’t even look into a Gulf Coast vacation assuming it’s out of their budget. As with any place, there are high-end areas as well as more affordable homes. Your proximity to the beach and the size of your home or condo will definitely come into play but it is definitely worth looking into. There are also restaurants of all kinds from casual to fine dining and a number of options that won’t break the budget. Special offers and seasonal discounts are often available on Destin and 30A vacation rentals that can help seal the deal.

There’s nothing to do besides go to the beach. This one always surprises us. First of all, why would you NOT want to go to the beach? The Gulf Coast is famous for soft, sugar white sand and gorgeous emerald water. Ok, well you can’t spend the entire day there but there is much more to do in town. Championship golf courses, premier shopping outlet malls, outdoor concerts, and seasonal festivals are just a few of the many fun things to take advantage of on your vacation. We also have Big Kahuna’s Waterpark, The Track recreation center with go-karts, bumper boats, rides and an arcade, and IMAX theaters. If the beach gets boring, rent a jet-ski or paddleboard and get a closer look at our marine friends.

There’s only seafood available. While living on the coast makes it much easier to get fresh, delicious seafood, that’s definitely not the only thing we have to eat around here. If you aren’t excited about amazing fish tacos and crab cakes, you can get a nice steak at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, fajitas at Cantina Laredo’s, or a great burger at Fleming’s. It’s hard to find a restaurant in the area that doesn’t offer a superb menu with something for all tastes. If you decide to try some seafood, get the Coconut Shrimp or Grouper Reuben at Pompano Joe’s!

These are the myths we wanted to clear up and there are probably more but everyone will just have to see for themselves. Destin still has our hearts and anyone that hasn’t visited is missing out for sure.
